Exploring the Perceptions and Attitudes of Men Who Have Experienced Counselling and Coaching - a Thematic Analysis
Aim of Study:
This study is a qualitative exploration of men’s attitudes and perceptions around two specific types of talking therapy: counselling and coaching. As the lead researcher, I will be trying to understand the barriers, prejudices, beliefs and opinions of talking therapies, and how men feel about engaging in therapy in general. I will be exploring the similarities and differences between counselling and coaching as two distinct talking therapy interventions, then examining the implications for future practice, and potential feasibility of offering both disciplines together as a dual intervention.
Participants Needed:
- UK-based men who are aged between 18-49.
- Must have some lived experience of receiving either (i) counselling, OR (ii) coaching – (including life  coaching and therapeutic coaching).
- The therapy/coaching must have taken place within the past five years.
Participant Involvement:
Interested participants will be sent a Participant Information Sheet. They will be given the opportunity to ask any questions via e-mail or telephone before agreeing to take part. Consenting participants will then attend a 45-minute semi-structured interview on MS Teams at a convenient day and time of their choosing. All participants will be fully debriefed and given a Participant Debrief Sheet, with a list of resources they can use if required.
Contribution:
It is hoped that the data obtained will provide valuable insights and implications for improving gender-informed therapeutic practice in the sphere of men's mental health and well-being.
