Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

The Communications team supports priorities and initiatives across the company. We use a variety of content formats and communication channels to deliver relevant company news and information in a creative, concise and effective manner to various stakeholders. The focus for this role is on communications that support and advance business objectives and reinforce Travelers' culture. As an AVP of Communications, you will act and serve as a communications advisor to the head of a business or function in the execution of communications plans and strategies. You will work closely with the business, function and/or initiative leaders to develop and deliver complex communications plans. This includes drafting written materials, managing projects and related logistics, delivering final materials to stakeholders and overseeing execution. You will provide strategic communications counsel to company executives and senior management across the enterprise. This position manages communications professionals.

What Will You Do?

  • Draft, review and proofread written materials for accuracy, consistency, and adhere to Travelers brand guidelines for assigned communications projects without supervision.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of enterprise wide communications across all audiences and create, coordinate and manage appropriate vehicles for maximum effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Provide strategic communication counsel to executives and senior management with a primary focus on the leaders of Legal Services, Sustainability and Citizen Travelers (the company's non partisan civic engagement institute).
  • Cultivate strong partnerships with senior leaders and work effectively with colleagues across the company to implement communications initiatives.
  • Oversee the evaluation of the effectiveness of communications through deployment of qualitative and quantitative methods. Review recommended changes and ensure implementation as appropriate
  • Oversee recommendations to enterprise approval processes and manage use of templates, best practices and brand guidelines in the development of communications and implementation.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and mentor other team members on the development of communications and communications strategies.
  • Identify risks, issues and challenges and recommend solutions for communications work.
  • Manage team members and develop their expertise as business partners and trusted advisors.
  • Assist with the management of the Communications Department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Twelve years or more of experience in communications or a related field.
  • Five years of people management experience with the ability to effectively build, manage and lead teams.
  • Expert writing and editing skills, with ability to adapt to full array of audiences both inside and outside of company.
  • Ability to edit and proofread quickly and accurately.
  • Thorough understanding of contemporary communications concepts and appropriate methods and techniques for communicating with multiple audiences and the knowledge of when to apply them.
  • Thorough knowledge of business strategies.
  • Expert subject matter knowledge and ability to solve work problems of all types and complexities.
  • Expert presentation skills, with strong effectiveness to present to and influence senior leaders across functional areas and across the enterprise.
  • Advanced ability to lead the most complex communications projects.
  • Advanced ability to construct and operate within project budgets.
  • Advanced ability to interact with and influence executive and senior leaders.
  • Advanced business acumen with expert ability to think and operate strategically across functional areas and across the enterprise.
  • Ability to identify and manage emerging issues in the business environment, the insurance industry and the industries the corporation serves.

What is a Must Have?

  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, writing or relevant combination of educations with a minimum of nine years’ work experience within a marketing/communications role or related.
