About me and my therapy practice
How I work / What to expect:
I have been working with adults for over 15 years and have acquired extensive experience during this time: in private practice, the NHS and Relate. My original training was as an Integrative Psychotherapist and I have since trained in CBT, Compulsive Sexual Behaviour counselling, EMDR, relationship counselling and Psychosexual (Sex) Therapy.
My professional training includes:
MSc Degree in Psychosexual Therapy
Postgraduate Diploma in Relationship Counselling
Postgraduate Diploma in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing)
BSc Degree in Reflective Therapeutic Counselling Practice
CPCAB Advanced Diploma in Sex Addiction / Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Counselling
CPCAB Advanced Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CPCAB Advanced Diploma in Integrative Therapeutic Counselling
STOPSO CPD training in working with sexually offending adults.
If you’ve previously had therapy, you may find my working style to be ‘different’: I’m analytical in my approach and believe that the past impacts the present in ways that we aren’t always consciously aware of. I ask lots of questions; I often incorporate psycho-education into sessions, giving real-life (anonymous) examples to illustrate this. I usually prepare a CBT formulation to illustrate my understanding of the key issues you bring to sessions. I may also recommend articles etc for my clients to read, relevant to their individual circumstances. If you’re looking for a therapist who says little during sessions, then I’m probably not the right one for you.
The goal of our sessions is not to keep you in therapy, but to move you on in life - however, it's important to keep in mind, that something which has been troubling you for an extended period of time, often isn't going to be resolved in a matter of weeks.
Anything else, please feel free to ask when we speak.
Practice description
Psychotherapy or Counselling?
Counselling is shorter-term and focuses on supporting you through a current, difficult experience whereas Psychotherapy typically involves a more in-depth process of self-exploration, looking at how ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that are usually formed in early life, are affecting you now and what new attitudes and skills you can develop to live a happier and healthier life.
Types of therapy I offer:
Psychosexual (Sex) Therapy
Difficulties with sex and intimacy are quite common but also, they can be very distressing. As a Registered Psychosexual (Sex) therapist I draw on various therapeutic approaches to help adults of all ages to work through a wide range of relationship and Psychosexual difficulties. In addition to my Psychosexual and relationship training, I draw upon four therapeutic modalities:
• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which looks at our responses to phenomena .
• Person-Centred Therapy which looks at the ‘here and now'.
• Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic which is concerned with how elements from the past influence us in the present.
• Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing which aims to help you process the negative images, emotions, beliefs and body sensations associated with traumatic memories that seem to be ‘stuck’ and can contribute to mental health and sexual difficulties.
Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Counselling
Is psychotherapy that helps individuals manage and reduce problematic sexual behaviours they feel are out of control, often characterised by intense urges, repetitive sexual activities, and significant distress in their personal lives by addressing the underlying thoughts, emotions, and triggers that contribute to these behaviours.
Relationship Counselling
Is psychotherapy that helps people improve their relationships by:
Identifying & addressing relationship issues
Improving communication
Resolving conflict
Understanding why you behave the way you do in relationships
Resolving past trauma & loss
My first session
I offer an initial online 'conversation' (for which I don't charge) for you to experience how I work and for you to decide if you'd like to work with me? I am also happy to meet with you in person, if you prefer, for an initial 'conversation', for which I do charge a fee to reflect therapy room hire and my travelling time.
If we decide to work together, for the first 3-4 sessions, we will work our way through a detailed assessment to enable me to gain an in-depth understanding of the issue(s) you bring to therapy. I will also ask you to complete an attachment styles questionnaire. Once the assessment is completed, I usually produce a CBT Formulation, which illustrates my understanding of the key issues and, I will agree with you how the sessions should be structured, to move you forward.
What I can help with
Abuse, Addictions, AIDS/HIV, Anger management, Anxiety, Bereavement, Cancer, Depression, Disability, Health related issues, Identity issues, Infertility, LGBTQ+ counselling, Loss, Menopause, Men's issues, OCD, Phobias, Post-traumatic stress, Redundancy, Relationships, Self esteem, Sex-related issues, Sexual identity, Sexuality, Stress, Substance Dependency, Trauma, Women's issues, Work related issues
