About me and my therapy practice

I adapt my counselling method to the particular needs and personality of each individual client. Sessions tend to be conversational in style and are a collaborative process, whereby the client and myself develop a clear picture of his/her world, relationships and feelings. Sessions last for 50 minutes. I work weekdays, offering both daytime and evening sessions.

Practice description

There are a number of reasons why a client might seek my services. For some, there may has been an issue that dates back many years - something that has been getting in the way of them moving on. Others may feel they are stuck and unsure of how to break the deadlock of a situation. Many people find that therapy enables a deeper understanding of themselves and their life experience. Whilst it doesn't automatically offer all the answers therapy does allow the client the personal space with a non judgmental other - to really explore issues and perhaps meet themselves for the very first time.

About me and my therapy practice

I am an approachable and knowledgeable psychotherapist with 35 experience in the counselling field. I work with substance abuse and behavioural addictions.

Practice description

I developed my Intensive Addiction Therapy Programme after spending years working as a psychotherapist for a number of leading addiction treatment companies, both in residential rehabs and out-patient services; I have conducted many assessments and treatment plans for individuals across all addictions - whether those are substance or behavioural related. All of that experience has allowed me to hone my own ideas and approach to working with those with addiction issues in order to create a bespoke programme that I believe encompasses all the essential ingredients for a successful recovery.

Whilst residential rehab can be an absolute necessity for some seeking to overcome an addiction, for others - it isn't essential, helpful or in some cases viable. I have worked with parents who need to be there for their children, people who are self-employed or have to be physically present for their business or other responsibilities. For others, it may be that the structure or particular treatment focus of residential rehab didn’t work for them. Sometimes I have worked with those who have been in residential rehab(s) but have relapsed.

I believe that in order to recover from your addiction, it also makes sense to learn to do that in your everyday day life: at home, at work, out and about, amongst friends and family; so that when the challenges present themselves (as they invariably will) we can deal with them head-on in in the here and now. My aim is to help you develop a different mind-set and understanding and to arm you with a comprehensive set of tools and techniques that will help you to respond to the triggers and challenges you experience. in a healthier and more mindful way.

As the name of the programme suggests, there is initially a significant level of contact within the first month which we schedule within your existing timetable. Thereafter, we frequently review progress, in order to adjust and direct both the frequency and focus of the therapeutic work going forward.

My first session

The initial assessment is, in part, designed to ensure that out-patient therapy would be an appropriate and safe working framework. If physical dependency is present (related to alcohol or some other drugs) it may be that an in-patient medical detox be required initially. I am able to advise on this.

My intensive addiction therapy programme is conducted online and/or on the phone, unless the client is local in which case some sessions can be in-person.

In respect of the Intensive Addiction Therapy programme I only work with one client at any time.

Sessions will incorporate relapse prevention techniques and an exploration of underlying issues that may have contributed to an addiction or be supporting it.

About me and my therapy practice

I am an approachable and knowledgeable psychotherapist with 35 years of counselling and psychotherapy experience.

There are all sorts of reasons why someone might seek therapy. For some, it may be an issue that dates back many years - a trauma or experience that has felt too big or painful to address. For others it might be a more current issue or crisis that is causing a sense of overwhelm or stuck-ness. Often, there can be repeating patterns of behaviour or thinking that get in the way of living life more fully.

Simply put: If it matters to you, then it matters; and I can provide a safe, non-judgemental and containing space where we can collaboratively explore and uncover what is going on. My aim - and one which I am passionate about - is to facilitate a deeper understanding of yourself and the world that you live in so you feel better informed and equipped to deal with life's challenges.

I am trained in, and practice, an integrative approach which means that I draw upon different models of therapeutic theory and practice, depending on the needs of each individual client. These include psychodynamic, existential, cognitive behavioural and somatic approaches. Whilst I have particular interests in anxiety, trauma and addiction I have a breadth of experience in all areas, gained over the decades of working in the therapy field.
