About me and my therapy practice
Some lower cost sessions available. MSc. PG Dip. Dip CPC. MÂ鶹Դ´ (Accred). I am highly specialised in dealing with men's issues including violence, sexual trauma recovery, worrying of frightening sexual interests, pornography issues, fear of the world and fear of self. Men are still dealing with the message that emotions equal weakness; 'big boys don't cry'. I provide a respectful, unthreatening space where together we can counter that message. Sessions costs £70.00 however limited lower cost sessions are available; I try to make counselling as affordable as possible for those on the lowest incomes and can be flexible around number or length of sessions to limit the financial impact. Home visits may be available in certain limited circumstances. Mens' therapy groups and mixed sex groups are available. Groups for those suffering with porn addiction or other sexual issues can be arranged. I have previously provided Counselling, Psychotherapy & Clinical Supervision with Mankind UK, Sussex & Surrey Probation Service, Brighton University and Brighton & Hove Council as well as in my private practice. My practice is based in the Newington Area on Minto Street. I also teach Counselling at Edinburgh University and at Edinburgh College. My approach is mainly person centred and client led, however people come to therapy with goals and I keep focussed on those goals to help the clients get the growth they want. I invite clients to stay active in their growth and often invite them to undertake tasks and exercises outwith therapy sessions, but these are only invitations and not compulsory. Email john@thistletherapy.uk (no SMS please) to discuss an initial assessment.
Practice description
My Practice is based in South Central Edinburgh, in Newington, on Minto Street. I also hope soon to be able to offer some sessions in the EH55 area of West Lothian. I can also offer online sessions.
My first session
The first session is always an introductory session. It should take around an hour or so and there is only a one-off payment of ï¿¡70.00 which is payable in cash at the beginning of the session.
On the day, I will take some basic information from you. We will discuss the issues you are struggling with, what your goals are for therapy and the legal limits to confidentiality. It is not a therapy session but it may have some therapeutic value. I will confirm your GP details and take emergency contact details during the session. I will not be contacting your emergency contact or GP except in extreme circumstances which we will discuss.
If we decide to work together, I will ask you to sign a contract which we will both have copies of. We will also negotiate the fee (usually in the ï¿¡50-70.00 price range but this is negotiable) and arrange a suitable regular timeslot for us to meet.
It is normal to feel anxious before a first session and we will look at what anxieties might be around at the beginning of the session.
