About me and my therapy practice

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist, with a number of years of experience working with young people and staff within schools, and universities,  as well as adults of all ages through employee assistance prorammes, and in private practice.

I hold a Masters (distinction) in Psychodynamic Counselling with Children and Adolescents from Birkbeck College, London University and am a registered and accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

I have completed a three year advanced training in Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP).

I offer a warm and compassionate approach, whilst challenging unhelpful and self-sabotaging processes which might be preventing clients from leading full emotional lives. This approach is very effective in treating clients who struggle with anxiety and/or depression, or who have problems in their relationships with others, or who might be struggling with behavioural problems such as eating disorders or angry outbursts.

Practice description

I can work long or short term, and usually suggest weekly meetings but fortnightly can also be useful. You might just want a limited number of sessions to explore what's troubling you, or perhaps you are considering longer term therapy to deepen your understanding of your problems and feelings, and make some choices and lasting changes which might improve your quality of life well into the future.

The foundations of my work are psychodynamic, and I draw from Attachment theory to help understand how relationship patterns emerge and grow.

I offer a kind, curious attitude which is challenging enough to promote growth but empathic enough to stay real and safe. We will seek to understand very precisely the aspects that are holding you back, and hope to make some changes to give you new directions.

Working online has opened up new opportunities for therapy - it is now easier to access and presents more of a level playing field. We can all be in comfort while we work.

My first session

I can discuss the work with you initially for free in a phone call before a commitment is made.

We can discuss the presenting issue, and get an idea about how many counselling sessions might be necessary.

I will be curious about what brings you to therapy now, when and why your difficulties started and what a successful outcome will look like.

In the first therapy session we will formulate your treatment goals, and start to identify your current problems which are holding you back. I will ask about your family and cultural background, and will be interested in your history, as well as why you have decided to seek help now.

After the first session we will have a better idea about whether short or longer term therapy might be recommended. You will go away from this session with lots to think about and consider. As therapy continues, you will become more aware of your own processes - both those which help you in a healthy way, and those which have been causing you problems. This gives you choices about what you would like to change, and what alternatives there might be for you.
