About me and my therapy practice
If you are considering the brave step of talking about things that may be becoming too difficult to endure by yourself, I aim to provide a warm, accepting welcome for you and your experiences. I will sensitively help you to explore them, without judgement.
Working with anxiety, depression, stress, panic, bereavement and other issues, I have specialised in rape and sexual abuse, including from childhood.
My approach is empathetic, to gently work with the most private issues.
The principles of the person centred approach are to build a trusting therapeutic relationship which prizes the clients experience, including over any experience or expertise of the therapist.
This is why it will always be my priority to respect and follow your experience as you describe it.
In addition, I can explain some of the evidence-based research that might offer a framework or some additional understanding.
I also offer short, focused Mindfulness based meditation practices which have proved useful for emotional self regulation and gaining insight.
I use guided Focusing techniques to allow people to experience their feelings in a safe way, as appropriate.
My aim is to support you with whatever you need to bring, in a gentle, sensitive nonjudgemental way. I have experience of working with varied cultural backgrounds and welcome diversity of experience.
I am a Â鶹Դ´ Accredited Counsellor with many years of experience, a MIND Credentialed Therapist, and have worked at a specialist counselling service for rape and sexual abuse survivors, male and female.
Practice description
As the key to progress in therapy is really about developing a relationship of trust with your counsellor I choose to work in the person centred approach, where your experiences are heard and respected as the most valuable element and in complete confidence. Your unique situation is the very centre of the counselling. I listen without judging what you tell me and with unconditional positive regard for you, seeking to understand your side of things, in your frame of reference. This is a very affirming process. At the moment I am working face to face where possible. There is free parking and a good bus route.
We can also work on Zoom, Skype or phone if you prefer, or in exceptional circumstances.
I learned many meditation techniques over 25 years from highly qualified meditation teachers, including The Dalai Lama. However the Mindfulness meditations I offer are short (2 or 3 minutes), simple, non-religious, along the lines of westernised models.
I work mainly during office hours with some availability in the evenings and mornings, at a higher rate.
My first session
We can explore how we might work together, and you’ll also get a feel for it as we talk together.
You’ll be under no pressure to talk about things you’re not ready to disclose. You don’t have to say everything all at once until you feel comfortable doing that.
On the other hand, if you feel comfortable and confident you can bring whatever depth of issues you want to.
In the first session, and in all others, you’ll be absolutely in control of what you talk about and how you choose to express it.
For ethical reasons I don’t normally book initial appointments unless I know I have availability to continue the process. This is to prevent an opening up with no follow up possible.
So we would discuss mutual ongoing availability before the first appointment, even though there is no obligation whatsoever to come back after the first appointment.
