About me and my therapy practice
‘Where there is darkness, there is also light’
Human: I want and need some help and support PLEASE.
Internet: gives endless scrolling list of smiling therapists
So, why me?
Because I’ve had to heal from my own substantial emotional harm after living with a parent suffering from post-traumatic stress and being brought up in a high-demand, Hell-based fundamentalist religious environment as well as making my own difficult decisions around relationships and other issues later in life.
Because I have been in practice as a qualified counsellor for almost 20 years. I believe I communicate with clients in a clear and direct way in a spirit of honesty and kindness in order to increase your ‘light’ - awareness of your potentials and possibilities as well as any pitfalls and precipices.
Because I enjoy sharing a Gestalt perspective with other people, for people to regain contact with their life-energy and their own personal power, their hopes and life-dreams, their personal light.
Because I am a graduate with a post-graduate diploma in Gestalt counselling and engaged in a Buddhist psychotherapy course for two years.
Life is, amongst other things, demanding and confusing and it is so easy to become entangled in unhealthy situations and relationships: we are ‘thrown into life’ and then often blown and buffeted around as we make our way through the challenges of such things as relationship, employment and health issues whilst enmeshed in Trump, Putin, Brexit and climate change.
Counselling offers the opportunity to press pause, take refuge and review and process who you currently are and what you want for your present and future.
Practice description
Feedback from my clients often expresses appreciation for my acceptance of whatever they say to me as well as my kindness towards them.
I am currently offering sessions via telephone or online.
I have had substantial previous experience of providing counselling and advice via the telephone in the voluntary (Samaritans) and private sectors.
In my practice, I have seen people for short-term work (6 to 10 sessions) and long-term (over ten years, in one case).
I enjoy working with creativity and imagination, where appropriate.
I want to see people as individuals without labels, responding by being open and accepting or, alternatively, active and involved, as appropriate. I enjoy working in-depth therapeutically.
I am particularly interested in providing help around;
- low self-esteem;
- rejuvenating healthy relationships and leaving unhealthy relationships;
- Assisting others to move on from inherited, dogmatic and/or oppressive belief systems to which they may belong or from the effects of beliefs they have had in the past (known as religious trauma).
I am not a member of any organized (or disorganised) religion although in the past I have belonged to Christian (as a child) and Buddhist groups, as well as having several years training in Buddhist psychotherapy. I acknowledge people’s choices around belief and unbelief.
MY EXPERIENCE:
- working as a qualified counsellor includes running a therapy service for several years at a G.P. surgery.
- I used to counsel clients with debilitating long term health problems within a hospital Pain Clinic.
- I also provided counselling for the Meningitis Trust as part of my independent counselling practice that also involved a very wide range of clients.
- Previous career in advice work including several year as a national trainer in the field.
- I have professional and personal experience of coping with long-term health conditions and reconstruction after indoctrination as well as with parenting, including step-families.
My first session
I realise that searching for a counsellor/therapist is often a bewildering, involved and difficult process and also that it is my privilege to have contact with you.
I very much want to put you at ease as much as possible and to take in everything that you want to say to me in an open and accepting way. I want you to be in control of the shape of the therapy that I provide, including such things as the number of sessions.
I am very open to feedback about my work and I respect your right to begin and end therapy when you want but I would highly recommend an appropriate ending/completion session: abrupt endings are often psychologically harmful.
If you contact me, we will have an initial telephone discussion for me to hear briefly what help you are wanting from any counselling that you have with me so that I can assess whether I may be able to help you
If appropriate, we will then book in in our first session together where we can then both properly evaluate whether we can work together in a meaningful way. If so, we will discuss and clarify the general terms of your future therapy with me.
I offer a 30 minute session free of charge for anyone unsure of telephone or online working.
Thank you for reading my profile, please feel free to make contact with me to explore the possibility of working with me.
I wish you well with your life.
‘Trauma is not what happens to us but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness’. Peter Levine

‘It’s never too late to be what you might have been’ George Eliot
‘It’s dark because you are trying too hard.
Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly.
