About me and my therapy practice

Hi, my name is Catherine Geary, an Eating Disorder Therapist based in Belfast.

I offer bespoke individual online therapy for adults who struggle with their relationship with food and their body.

Working with me will provide you with an understanding and safe space to explore your eating issues and find freedom from disordered eating for good. You might already have a diagnosed eating disorder, but you don’t need to have been diagnosed with an eating disorder to seek therapy; you may already be on your recovery journey or you may be at the very beginning.

Put simply, if worries about food and your body are making you unhappy and getting in the way of you living life to the full, then we can work on this together.

Practice description

My approach is therapeutically led, together we will understand how your eating issues came about, what your relationship with food looks like and how we need to change that. Exploring the underlying cause and adaptive function of eating problems is a crucial step to resolve eating issues for good.

My initial clinical training was in psychodynamic psychotherapy, this helps us gain insight into the underlying causes of your eating and body issues, understand what your unique relationship with food looks like and how we need to change that to move towards a life free from disordered eating. We might also utilize techniques from CBT for eating disorders to address behavioural complexities and thoughts that are associated with eating issues. I also incorporate the principles of intuitive eating in my work and firmly advocate for a non-diet and health at every size (HAES) approach.

I am a fully registered member of the Â鶹ԭ´´ (MÂ鶹ԭ´´). I hold a first class Masters degree in Psychology where I specialised in eating disorders and body image, I have a Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling and I have completed CBT for eating disorders training through Oxford University.

My first session

I offer a free 15 minute zoom consultation for anyone that is considering working with me. In this consultation we will discuss therapy options and what is right for you now. If we decide to proceed we will book you in for your first session. All our sessions will take place online.

Our first session will be longer than our usual sessions, we will take 90 minutes to carry out a full assessment of your current situation. We will also discuss the therapy contract and administrative matters. We will confirm our regular session time, this will be the same time every week.

Regular weekly therapy is 50 minute sessions, the therapy is tailored to you and we will build in different techniques and tools as we work together and find what is most helpful for you.
