Abuse, trauma, or emotional neglect - it might include experiences of being excluded or subjected to coercive, traumatic or abusive behaviour (including a history of sexual abuse) and can exhibit symptoms of PTSD, social anxiety, low self-worth, stress, and anxiety chronic health conditions. I use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) in the healing process. For more information visit my web www.marzenapenfold.com/emdr/

Addictive, habitual, or compulsive behaviours can show up in many ways, such as self-harm, neglect, intrusive thoughts, or unhealthy patterns with food, alcohol, sex and porn or substances, which may impact your relationships and your emotional well-being.

Grief or loss - through the end of a relationship, loss of employment or illness. It might also include other changes of circumstance like parenting and or children leaving home.

About me and my therapy practice

Thank you for considering my services. I understand you may be reading this because you're currently facing a challenging time or perhaps dealing with an ongoing difficulty.

Each person who seeks my help brings their unique experiences and concerns. As we work together, we will develop a working relationship that recognises your qualities and past, and responds to your present needs.

My expertise lies in working with individuals and couples both in-person and online.

I am pleased to work with individuals from diverse ethnic, racial, sexual, and gender identities, as well as varied social and cultural backgrounds, and those with different faiths or none. Regardless of how you identify, I offer a caring space where you can explore all your feelings.

I am happy to respond to your individual needs, whether that might be:

  • Work/life imbalance
  • Trauma, abuse, and emotional neglect
  • Compulsive, addictive or habitual behaviours including sex compulsive behaviours
  • Stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Grief or loss
  • Identity, gender, sexuality: This embraces cultural and physical diversity, and neurodiversity, and includes matters relating to race, LGBTQ issues, and a history of sexual abuse (childhood and adult).
  • Relationship issues - communication breakdowns, trust issues, intimacy, women's issues and conflict resolution. I offer individuals and couples counselling in areas of conflict resolution, relationship problems, trust issues, affairs (online and real), self-esteem, intimacy, confidence building, depression, stress, second families, and coping with decisions around separation and divorce. I also support sex-related issues, sexual identity, sexuality, relationship concerns and women's issues. I help my clients gain insight into their relationship dynamics and develop practical skills to foster intimacy, resolve conflicts, and rebuild trust.

Practice description

I have something very distinct to offer as a counsellor with specific training in ALL of the following fields: Mindfulness-Based; Person-Centred; with input from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), plus the Play Therapy approach. My experience and training in all of these areas help me to bring a tailor-made approach to your specific needs, with warmth and reflection in one-to-one therapy sessions.

It’s crucial that we create a flexible, individual approach that meets your changing needs within a growing therapeutic relationship. I use CBT to explore thoughts and behaviours and to help you relate to your experience from a cognitive perspective. In this approach, the relationship must be based on trust, non-judgment, and acceptance.

I work privately with young people and adults, offering open-ended and short-term therapy. I have worked as a school counsellor in a secondary school, and at Bucks Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services in the NHS (CAMHS) with young people aged 11-18.

Something about me

Before training as a therapist, I had a career as a nurse and worked for many years in the City of London as a scientist. I’ve run my own business, and worked in corporate, private and voluntary organisations. My other experiences include being a mother, wife, yoga teacher, mentor, life coach and psychotherapist. And yes, I understand what it’s like to feel under pressure or be pulled in different directions. All of the above experiences provided me with beneficial lessons.

My journey of self-exploration grew from a sense of discontent with how I was responding to my life – a recognition that I was unhappy. Inspired by the patience and kindness of therapists,  I decided to pursue a career in psychotherapy.

I have taught mindfulness, yoga, and meditation and have practised them for over twenty years.  Nature and creativity are essential parts of my life. I spend my free time in forests and mountains.
