About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Georgie. I'm an experienced Counsellor and Couples Therapist. I specialise in helping clients who are struggling with life's challenges and their relationships. Working with you to understand yourself better, identifying patterns and empowering you to make changes that really make a difference.
Working with individuals:
I believe we all have the power to make our lives better, but there are times when we may need to seek some help and that's where therapy comes in. Life can throw up many challenges and we can find ourselves feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed and exhausted. I would like to offer you a safe space to explore what's going on for you, offering my warmth and acceptance, so that you feel seen and heard.
Further training with Relate has brought a more relational focus to the way that I work, helping my clients understand what they bring into their relationships from their families of origin, identifying the patterns and cycles that exist and how to change them.
Working with Couples:
What I often see in my therapy room, are couples who work well alongside each other, but they have lost their emotional connection. Some couples feel like they've been having the same argument for years. Couples therapy is about breaking the cycle and finding a way back to one another. Firstly, we need to learn how to listen. It requires us to hold empathy for ourselves and our partners at the same time, so we don’t get stuck in entrenched positions of blame. As a Relate trained therapist, I will guide you through these difficult conversations.
I encourage my clients to see couples work as an opportunity to re contract. How do we want this next chapter to look? Perhaps our lives have changed so dramatically, our relationships haven’t quite caught up. If we feel fulfilled, loved, supported and on the same team we are in a much better place to tackle the inevitable challenges that each life stage presents.
Practice description
Experience:
I have experience working with a wide range of client issues including – anxiety, panic attacks, bereavement, family dynamics and relational issues, low self-esteem, depression, adjusting to life changes and feeling stuck.
I hold a Diploma with Distinction in Humanistic Counselling from the University of Chichester. Person Centred theory lies at the heart of my approach. My training also allows me to draw on a breadth of other Humanistic approaches including Transactional Analysis, Gestalt and Attachment Theory. Further training with Relate has brought a more relational focus to how I work, being rooted in Systemic and Psychodynamic theory.
My first session
Once you’ve made the decision to start therapy, making that first step can be daunting. I aim to respond to all enquiries within 24 hours, so you won’t be left waiting. This is what will happen if you make an enquiry:
For individuals I will offer you a free 20 min consultation via Zoom and for Couples a 40 min consultation via Zoom. This is an opportunity to understand what is bringing you to Counselling/Couples Therapy and also so that we can decide whether we think we can work together. The Counselling process is collaborative and feeling comfortable with your therapist is essential. We are all so different and what suits one person, might not suit another. I won’t be offended if you decide me or my approach isn’t for you. It’s also important that what you are bringing is within the limits of my expertise. Some client issues need specialist help. If this is the case I will do my best to signpost you to get the help you need.
If we decide we’d like to proceed I will book our first session. For face to face clients we will decide on a time to meet at the same time each week. I see clients at my therapy room in Hawkley, Near Liss (10 mins from Petersfield). I also work online.
At the start of our first session we will talk through my contract together and we’ll both sign. This isn’t a lengthy document, but important to make you aware of confidentiality and the exceptions, data protection etc. We will also establish a goal for our work together. This is something that we will keep checking in on throughout the process, with a review at six weeks. The length of the process is up to you and we will work towards an ending when you feel you are ready to. Each process is entirely different, with some clients wanting short term therapy and others wishing to work longer term. Sometimes it isn’t clear until we get started.
As a registered member of the Â鶹Դ´, I adhere to their ethical framework, and I have regular supervision to support my counselling practice.
