About me and my therapy practice
Hello, my name is Cheryl, an experienced, relational, Integrative Psychotherapist and Counsellor, who can provide therapeutic support in many areas. However, I specialise in Attachment and Trauma therapy, Relationship issues and Bereavement therapy. My aim is to help you uncover your inner strength, achieve healing, resolve & grow.
I bring a unique perspective informed by my roles as a wife, mother, adoptive parent & former family solicitor. Not forgetting 20+ yrs as a specialist foster carer re-parenting children with attachment and trauma. This rich blend of personal and professional experience allows me to offer insightful, empathic, tailored therapy.
My relational approach prioritizes the therapeutic alliance, as evidentially it is proven a strong connection between therapist and client is key to successful outcomes.
Therapy is a reflective process and I believe the answer is always hidden within you. Openness and honesty are vital in working together and I aim to create a compassionate, non-judgemental, safe, space where you can feel at ease to share your story and what has happened to you.
I draw primarily from person-centered therapy while incorporating other techniques based on your needs. These include:
-Psychodynamic Therapy and Attachment-Focused Approaches
-Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), reframe narrative
-Transactional Analysis (e.g., script and PAC work)
-Internal Family Systems (IFS) parts and inner-wounded child work
-Solution-Focused Therapy
-Somatic healing, grounding techniques, breathwork, and tapping
My qualifications include LLB (Hons), Pg Dip LPC, Counselling Cert, and Pg Dip Counselling and Psychotherapy. As a Â鶹Դ´ member, I adhere to the highest standards of ethics and professional care. I am fully insured, GDPR compliant and enhanced DBS.
If you're feeling anxiety, low self-esteem, catastrophising, panic attacks, procrastinating or symptoms impacting you and your relationships daily, then I am here to support you.
Practice description
I believe the answer is always within you, the client. Often it can be difficult to see the woods for the trees when we are spinning so many plates or run down. Basic functioning is not living.
Clients may struggle with stress, anxiety, low mood or symptoms of attachment and trauma related to childhood relationships or with partners. You may be a Carer or Parent who is burnt or reactive and misunderstanding their child’s communications of need. You may be grieving a loved one. During initial sessions, we will explore the issues, collaborate & create a plan together to address them in a way that helps you get your life back on track.
I am person-centred led and use this way of being and therapy to explore the here and now and presenting issues. I want to experience how you feel, see and experience the world through your eyes to understand how you navigate the world around you. Only then may I tailor therapy to your individual needs by blending in other concepts, theories or interventions.
I may suggest for looking through a psychodynamic and attachment- focused lens exploring childhood. This may help me understand you and any unhelpful ways of relating which may have kept you safe as a child but unhelpful in adult life. Why you may react in the manner you do or how you experience anxiety. Exploration, realisation and awareness can bring about change and greater improvement of Self. Further, it can bring about renewed closeness and connection as opposed to disconnection and discord in how we relate with others, our partners and children
For child/adult trauma, this would be taken at a clients' pace. Undertaking grounding techniques and lifting the lid on trauma gently and for short periods with agreement as we gently build a window of tolerance and stabilisation to reduce symptoms.
I aim to offer you compassionate understanding and a safe space, as you navigate your personal challenges, creating awareness, empowering change and decision making.
My first session
Understandably your first session may feel daunting but there is nothing to be concerned about. It is normal. We will get to know each other and discuss the issues you are having and perhaps undertake a little assessment of what goals you wish to make and discuss how they may be achieved.
I would ask that you attend appointments whether face to face or in person or by telephone 5-10 minutes early and that there is no one else present and you are free of interruptions so there can be absolute client confidentiality and a dedicated space just for you.
Sessions will be 55 minutes long.
Video sessions will take place by google meet. Don't worry, if you are not a technical wizard. You do not need to download apps.
I am confident we can achieve your desired goals and you feeling so much more relieved, confident and empowered going forward. I look forward to working with you.
