About me and my therapy practice

I believe that everyone could benefit from counselling at some point in their life. We all get stuck from time to time and having someone who has no preconceived ideas about you and offers a truly non-judgement place to sort through your thoughts and feelings can be life-changing. As an American, who has lived in the UK for over 20 years, I have witnessed attitudes of seeking out counselling change for the better. There seems to be less of a stigma around mental health in general and it's exciting to be a part of this.

On a personal level, I do this work because I believe in the process wholeheartedly. My experience as a client throughout the years has been one of the most important parts of my training. I don't ask anything of my clients that I myself have not done or am willing to do.

Practice description

I am an integrative counsellor who uses different methods based on the individual client's needs. I believe the relationship between the client and the counsellor is one of the most important aspects of this work. Developing this therapeutic relationship is the groundwork for creating a safe space to talk about difficult subjects.

I work with a wide range of mental health issues including depression and anxiety. My expertise lies in trauma with a focus on domestic abuse and sexual violence.

In addition to issues surrounding domestic abuse, I also work with people who have left or are trying to leave high mind control groups, cults and extreme religious practices. The effects of coercive control in such groups are not dissimilar to those in a domestic abuse situation.

I also welcome clients who are not at a crisis point. Sometimes we need to speak to someone else in order to hear our own voice. Seeking counselling at this point can help prevent depression and anxiety down the road.

I work with men, women, LGBTQ+ and young people aged 16 and above. I also welcome clients with both diagnosed and undiagnosed neurodiversity.

My first session

I offer a free 20-minute phone or online consultation. I will ask you a little about what brought you to counselling to make sure I'm a suitable choice and have the availability you need. This is also an opportunity for you to get a feel for me and see if this could potentially be a beneficial partnership. Sometimes we book our first session at the end of the consultation and sometimes the client wants to think it over. Either way is acceptable.
