About me and my therapy practice
I am a qualified and experienced psychodynamic psychotherapist. I hold a Post-Graduate Diploma in Individual and Couple Psychodynamic Psychotherapy from Tavistock Relationships, an internationally recognised centre for couple psychotherapy teaching, research and practice.
Alongside my private practice in Nottingham and London, I am a Visiting Clinician, Assessor and Academic Tutor on the Post-Graduate Diploma at Tavistock Relationships, which is delivered in partnership with Birkbeck College, University of London.
Before training as a therapist, I worked as a solicitor in a large international firm in London. I went on to specialise in conflict and dispute resolution, becoming accredited as a civil and commercial mediator (ADRGg) in 2015. Alongside my legal and mediation work I have also worked and volunteered extensively with young people, including through charities Childline and The NSPCC. Delivering better outcomes for children and families is a large part of what motivates me in my psychotherapeutic work.
Practice description
I work psychodynamically with clients across a range of challenges, such as:
- communication difficulties, circular conflicts, being understood
- divorce and separation, co-parenting, blended families
- life transitions eg new parents, empty nesting, retirement
- sex life and intimacy, sexual dysfunction, mismatched desire
- loss and bereavement, perinatal loss, ill-health
- relationship crises, betrayals, rupture and repair, rebuilding trust
The focus of couple therapy is to provide a safe, supportive and non-judgmental space where you and your partner can seek to better understand yourselves, each other and your relationship. The aim is to help create clarity, develop insight, improve communication and build shared understanding. You can explore past and present concerns, all the time working at a pace to suit you.
Many people seek relationship therapy without a partner. Individual relationship therapy is often sought by those experiencing difficulties in coping with a break-up, those seeking deeper understanding of their relationship or by those who might find themselves repeating unhealthy patterns in relationships. It can also be useful for those who want to explore the absence of lasting intimate relationships.
The psychodynamic approach is a non-directive, exploratory way of working. It seeks to identify long-held often unconscious habits, patterns and beliefs. It can be beneficial in addressing deep-seated, complex patterns and behaviours to help patients create a more fulfilling life. The approach involves examining how past experiences might shape and influence our thinking about both our relationships with others and our relationship with ourselves and the world around us.
My first session
I usually suggest we arrange an initial 15-minute phone consultation free of charge for us to discuss your situation and questions. To do this you can get in touch using the form on the left, or email me direct at info@jengreentherapy.com.
If it feels right, we will then schedule a 75-minute consultation. This offers us an opportunity to get to know each other and to talk about your concerns in more depth and what you are looking for help with, whether as an individual or as a couple. We can think together about what therapy is like and whether you would find it useful, both in terms of your emotional and psychological needs and wider practical considerations.
The decision to start therapy is an important commitment and finding the right therapist can take time. We might decide to have up to 3 initial consultations to get a flavour of what it would be like working together before we make the shared decision to start regular therapeutic work.
