About me and my therapy practice
Despite all the advancements we have made as human beings, its seems that we still have not learned how to develop our emotional language.
So many people were never able to fully express all of their emotions during their early years or as young adults - anger is certainly not accepted by society and parents do not always know how to deal with it so it is forced inward, where it can fester.
You learn to survive in the world not always being who you really are. Maybe you are fearful about being accepted as your true self, judged or ridiculed, maybe you feel shame and even some guilt. There maybe times when you do not like your self and this will affect your interactions with others. Or maybe you are experiencing something that you are unable to share with others.
Whatever emotions that are not being expressed and left inside can cause self doubt or harm which may leave you feeling depressed and anxious, you may feel very alone and isolated at times.
It can be very confusing to understand what is going on for you and why you do not feel comfortable within yourself.
The way I work is to allow you to bring your whole self which can take time as we build trust and safety within our therapeutic relationship. It can be quite challenging if you are not used to talking about your feelings but my job is to help you bring them out into the open where we can understand certain behaviours, thought patterns, and feelings. Once this process has started, together we can work through some of the difficulties and it is by being with them and not avoiding them, that is the key to change. Of course this process is never an easy one, the relationship with the self is the most difficult but, a commitment to and trust in the process can lead to life changing transformations. The investment of time, effort and cost is part of trusting and valuing the process that has the potential to you living a better life.
Practice description
I work psychodynamically and this means weekly sessions at the same time on the same day. The length of time it takes for the work to unfold is variable upon many different factors. There is long term, open ended work or short term (time limited) work within a set number of sessions. The nature of the difficulty and your reasons for coming to therapy would determine whether long term or short term is suitable.
My preference is always to work in-person as the feeling in the room can be felt more easily and this can form part of our work. I am also willing and able to work online if in-person is not possible.
Initially we would have one or two sessions that forms part of the initial consultation and this would give you and I both the opportunity to see and feel if we would like to begin working together. Occasionally it is necessary to have a second meeting as part of the initial consultation if we were not quite sure after the first meeting.
My first session
First impressions can help decide whether you feel at ease with someone or not and our first meeting will give us that opportunity. We will talk about the therapy, cover some of your background information and of course, what brings you to therapy. If it is helpful for you, I can offer a free 5 minute phone call to help you decide if you would like to have an initial consultation with me. Initial consultations are payable in advance. If you would like to speak with me first, please email to let me know your availability and I will reply with my work mobile.
