About me and my therapy practice
As a therapist, my role is to create a safe space where you can feel relaxed enough that we can work together to facilitate positive change. We will look to utilise your core skills to create new choices and to make changes with unhelpful thoughts, emotions and behaviours. I provide a non-judgemental, confidential and trusting space for you to talk, and be heard where you can explore issues which cause you distress. I offer a warm style and incorporate humour, where appropriate, which helps you to feel comfortable as we work together to find the correct therapy tools.
We will work together to resolve these issues. I will support you to find ways to express and understand your thoughts, emotions and behaviours and to recognise that positive change is possible in times of difficulty. Working with me should feel like a team effort – you bring your expertise in you and your life and I bring the expertise in psychology tools. This collaboration should help you to feel empowered and safe while you work on your mental health.
Therapy is not "one size fits all". I adapt to your individual needs and use the skills and experience I have to help you to navigate through difficulties.
I originally trained as a counsellor and then as a CBT therapist but have since trained in a variety of therapeutic modalities. This enables me to tailor therapy to each individual's needs. Further to my therapy skills, I am a mindfulness practitioner and use this experience to complement my therapy work.
I have treated individuals in clinical, private, community and virtual settings. I use a collaborative and integrative approach and have experience working with issues such as; Panic Disorder, Anxiety, Depression, Agoraphobia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Relationship Problems, Sleep Disturbances, Abuse, Poor Self Esteem, Social Phobia, Specific Phobias, Anger Management, Eating Disorders, Addictions, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Worrying, Grief and more.
Practice description
I work online, in person in my office and in person doing a walk and talk session.
Online appointments with me are conducted online using a secure video link. You can choose to have your camera off or on, whatever is more comfortable. If internet access is not reliable, I can arrange telephone appointments also.
In person appointments are conducted in my Ramsbottom office or in the park near to my office.
Sometimes people are sceptical about therapy when it is not face to face. However, after working this way for the past 5 years, I have found I am able to offer more flexibility in times of appointments while still providing the same standard of support and care to my clients.
We all lead far busier lives and making time to focus on yourself can feel impossible at times. Remote therapy allows you to have your session in a place where you can feel comfortable and with less interruption to your day.
My first session
Speaking with a therapist can be daunting and plenty of people are nervous about doing it for the first time. However, what you will find is that thinking about what will happen is worse than the actual appointment.
Prior to our first meeting, you will be sent a multiple choice questionnaire to fill out, about how you have felt in the past couple of weeks. **If you have any difficulties with reading I will complete this with you in our first meeting.
You will also be sent a contract. This is a document which explains some of the rules I adhere to around confidentiality and also details about fees and cancellation charges.
Our first appointment is a chance for me to introduce myself and we will have a discussion about what has been going on and what has lead you to see therapy. I will also ask some questions about who your family members and friends are, how you spend your time and similar things to help be to begin to build a better picture of what your life is like as I start to get to know you.
We will try to identify specific issues which I could help with and ways in which I can be of support.
We will end the session after about an hour. Sometimes it is a little less. People often feel tired after their appointment, so I allow you to go away and think about how you felt speaking with me and if you would like to continue working with me.
