About me and my therapy practice

Fed up of feeling low, overwhelmed or disconnected? Want to explore what's weighing you down in a down to earth and supportive space where all your feelings are welcome? For me counselling is all about helping you feel truly seen and heard so you can explore what's troubling you. I can help you find new perspectives and move on from whatever it is that’s been holding you back. Whatever it is you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

My approach helps people feel better in themself using a combination of talking therapy and somatic, body orientated practices. Working with the mind and the body helps integrate all of our parts so we can make better sense of our thoughts and feelings. Talking therapy helps put meaning to our experience, but often our bodies hold memories and emotions that we struggle to find words for.

Amongst other things I work with anxiety, depression, low self esteem, lack of purpose, loss & bereavement, life transitions & childhood trauma.

If you're still unsure if therapy is for you feel free to get in touch for a no obligation initial call to find out more about how I work & how I can help you. Although I will ask what brings you to therapy until you decide you would like to continue I won’t ask for a full history as I understand how emotionally draining it can be revisit difficult memories.

Practice description

My main training is in Transactional Analysis which is an integrative and humanistic model. This means rather than a one size fits all approach I have different ways of meeting you where you are at and to help you move through what's troubling you.

Talking therapy gives words to your thoughts and feelings. Through empathic witnessing and gentle challenge I will help you gain more awareness of the origins of your struggles. With this awareness you can begin to compassionately challenge your familiar frame of reference. All too often how you see yourself now is based on what happened to you in the past. Together we can explore new possibilities and different ways of relating.

Body orientated therapy brings another layer to the therapeutic experience. The mind gives us access to our conscious experience and memory, but as we now know the mind and body are intertwined. How do we know we are happy, angry, anxious…? We might experience a warm feeling in the heart, a knot in the stomach, hunched shoulders. Exploring physical sensations and movements can help us fully experience our emotions. We can learn to move in and out of difficult sensations and emotions so that they become less overwhelming. Emotions are part of our visceral experience of being alive and yet often we learn to suppress them. Feeling and expressing emotions helps cultivate a resilient nervous system that will support you through the inevitable ups and downs of life. It’s about learning to surf the waves instead of feeling that you're being pulled under.

I adhere to the Â鶹ԭ´´ and UKATA ethical frameworks and receive regular supervision and training as having my own therapist.

My first session

Firstly I suggest meeting so you can see if you think you would like to work together. I will ask what brings you therapy at this time, what you hope to get from the sessions and about your previous experiences of therapy. It might seem that I am asking you a lot of questions, but it is also an opportunity to ask any questions you might have about me and how I work.

If you decide you would like to continue we will agree a regular weekly time to meet. Initially I suggest 4 sessions and then we can check in with where we are at. Some issues can be worked through quite quickly, others will take longer.

How the work evolves will depend a lot on you. There is no magic wand. I encourage you to reflect on what we discuss during the week and perhaps bring something you would like to talk about each session. Sometimes you will feel better after a session, sometimes you might feel emotionally drained. Sometimes a kind, compassionate ear is all you need to help find a fresh perspective, sometimes entrenched patterns need more gentle challenge. Ultimately you will get out what you put in.
