Monday through Thursday: I aim to be as flexible as possible, so please contact me to discuss (I also practice in Exeter, EX4).
I reserve a limited number of places at reduced rates for full-time university students and those on low income. Please enquire - if no reduced rate places are available, I operate a waiting list. These sessions are usually limited to 12 sessions.
My Exeter location is wheelchair accessible up to a 450kg limit.
About me and my therapy practice
I offer warm and welcoming in-person or online counselling services for adults and children age 12+, with optional canine assisted therapy with Merlin (in my Exeter location). I have particular experience with depression, anxiety, abuse and trauma, though can offer support for a wide range of issues.
My former career as a military officer means that I bring a calm, clear-minded logic to counselling, which I combine with natural compassion, warmth and empathy. Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming, with so many different skills and approaches to choose from, but maybe what you're seeking is simply someone you can trust, who'll listen without judgment and provide genuine support. That's the heart of what I do. Whether you've had counselling before or if you're unsure of what to expect, that's ok as I'll always go at your pace.
Perhaps you're currently serving, ex-forces or with NHS/blue-light services and unsure about the whole counselling thing? I was unsure once and I still remember how daunting it can feel. With many years experience in the military, I can empathise with many of the challenges you've faced with a shared understanding of your experiences and cultures.
CANINE THERAPY: In my Exeter location on Queen St (by the Central Rail Station), I also offer Canine Assisted Therapy with Merlin, my 8 year old labrador. Animals have a unique ability to connect with people and there's increasing evidence to support the positive effects they can bring to therapy. Merlin can be a great asset in sessions, helping me to create an environment where clients feel safe to open-up about things they may find difficult to think and talk about. There's nothing complicated about his work - he just brings himself and his calming, unconditional acceptance.
Practice description
My history gives me a unique perspective on resilience and adaptation, and my experience working with a wide range of clients means I can tailor my approach to what works for you personally. I have particular experience with anxiety, depression, abuse and trauma and have worked in specialised settings with university students, children (12+) and people with experiences of abuse and trauma.
My relevant qualifications:
- MSc Health Psychology
- Diploma in Animal Assisted Therapy
- Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling
- Certificate in Counselling
I also have specific training in working with domestic abuse, trauma and neurodiversity.
What this all means is that I have a number of different ways to work with you in our sessions, which may include modalities such as CBT, Person Centred, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Family Systems and Existential therapy, though the key takeaway is that the way I work will be unique to your personality, preferences and needs. I believe the most important factor in helping you move forward is the relationship we build together so it's essential that you feel comfortable working with me, and I work hard to ensure that.I usually offer weekly sessions for clients, which can be for as long as duration as required. I am also experienced in delivering short-term, solution focused therapy (usually 6 weeks in duration where we concentrate on the 'now' and the future, rather than your history). We can discuss any questions you may have in an introductory session.
In Crediton, I see my clients in a peaceful and calm room just off the High Street. There's plenty of parking in the main car park, and even some lovely independent coffee shops to occupy you if you're early.
My Exeter room is equally peaceful (and an ideal space to include Merlin). It is also wheelchair accessible, so please do enquire if you need further details.
My first session
I offer a free initial phone call, or online session of approximately 20 minutes where we can discuss your needs and what you'd like to achieve within your sessions.
It's also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about counselling in general and the way in which I work.
If you're happy to proceed, we can then fix a regular appointment.
