About me and my therapy practice

CBT is a type of 'talking' psychotherapy that research continues to show to be effective in the treatment of a wide range of difficulties. CBT is based on the idea that the way we feel is affected by our thoughts and beliefs and how we behave. In sessions we aim to identify and change unhelpful, self-defeating patterns of behaviour and thinking.

CBT is also a collaborative type of therapy where sessions are enhanced by exercises and strategies the client can learn and use daily to help combat dysfunctional thinking leading to problems. Clients often feedback that they enjoy feeling 'in control' again and this type of counselling facilitates that sense of being able to 'cope' and problem solve effectively.

As well as working one to one with clients from a wide range of backgrounds, I have experience Lecturing in Psychology and Counselling across different therapeutic approaches and Organisations. I am an approved tutor for the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body.

I also develop specifically designed training and education packages for community organisations and groups. I recently helped integrate CBT strategies into a new programme for Faith Based Counselling which was awarded by the United Millennium Award Scheme in 2011.

Qualifications

Psychology, BA Hons; Cert. Person Centred Counselling; Dip. Pastoral Ministry Training (Association of Christian Counsellors); Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Therapy.

Practice description

I aim to offer a warm, supportive and safe space to help you make sense of any distress and to begin the process of change from worry to problem solving. the I use standard CBT inventories to determine range and severity of any symptoms, and to direct the treatment interventions for different difficulties. This also helps to regularly monitor the progress of the therapy and to ensure you are getting a positive benefit from it.

Everyone is individual and it is important for me to provide you with the specific interventions, skills, strategies and exercises to best help you overcome your problems. These may include anything from progressive relaxation techniques, guided journalling, cognitive (thought) restructuring exercises to behavioural activities and goal setting. We work collaboratively to agree on what can be managed and what may be helpful during and in between sessions.

Having lectured in Counselling and Psychotherapy and practiced CBT for over ten years, my own learning has expanded to incorporate the most current best practice according to peer reviewed research in the field.

This is a flexible approach and gains are made over time as tricky, often deeply embedded thinking habits are challenged using a variety of strategies. Therefore, much can be done between sessions- I liken it to 'mental- physio' as in reality neuroplasticity means we can adjust mental habits as we can improve physical limitations. Some clients find fortnightly sessions work well within their time and budget, some prefer weekly.

Supervision Practice

My Supervision largely follows a triune model where I more or less offer equal attention to:

1:The Counsellor: Their process and wellbeing. Work/life balance and boundaries. Negotiating difficulties that may arise in organisations or private practice.

2: The Clients: What guidance, support, expertise or even challenge may help the Supervisee with their caseload?

3: The Latest: How can I support the Supervisee to be aware of, and to avail of the best quality peer reviewed research signposting to best practice and new interventions?

I can also offer short term supervision to Therapists outside of their regular supervision where they wish to seek expertise for specific client issues.
