Massachusetts Gov. Patrick Seeks Rules on Rideshare Firms

December 11, 2014

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick’s administration is proposing limited state oversight for Uber and other popular ridesharing companies.

The Boston Globe reported Wednesday that Patrick, who leaves office after two terms next month, wants to give the state Department of Public Utilities the power to regulate the firms. The plan would also require the companies to obtain certificates to operate, conduct criminal background checks on drivers and have liability insurance.

Uber-Boston issued a statement in support of the proposed regulations, but a union representing cab drivers said it would do little to help the taxi industry, which claims the ridesharing firms operate illegally.

The Boston City Council has also been considering restrictions on Uber and other services such as Lyft and Sidecar.
