The declaration mobilizes Baltimore’s emergency resources to protect the persons affected by the incident and expands the resources available to tackle the emergency situation.
This state of emergency is in effect starting 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, and will remain in place for 30 days, subject to renewal or cancellation as conditions warrant.
Gov. Wes Moore earlier declared a state of emergency to deploy Maryland resources and said the state is working closely with President Joe Biden and federal officials.
Maryland officials told reporters that the missing people included at least eight from a construction crew that was working on the bridge. They said that two of the construction workers have been rescued, and first responders are continuing to look for other people in the river.
Bloomberg reported that in addition to major gridlock, the bridge collapse will affect an industrial park where businesses including Amazon, FedEx Corp., Home Depot and others have distribution warehouses.
The container ship appears to have lost power right before it ran into the bridge, Moore said.
