FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A boat explosion at a South Florida marina has left one person dead and six others injured, officials said.
The explosion occurred Monday night about 6 p.m. at the Lauderdale Marina, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said in a social media post.
Rescue workers transported injured people to local hospitals, three with traumatic injuries, officials said. Sebastian Gauthier, 41, of Quebec, was found dead in the water several hours later by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the Sun Sentinel news site reported. People at the dock had scrambled to assist the injured and search for Gauthier.
Fire rescue officials said they didn’t immediately know what caused the explosion but it came shortly after the boat was refueled and the engine was started, a witness told the Sentinel. The boat will be removed from the water and examined by investigators, a fire department spokesman said.
A second boat, the Dirty Blonde, caught fire when the first vessel burned through its tie lines and drifted into the Dirty Blonde, according to news reports.
